Background Mare Marieke

The Mare Marieke, build in 1880 at ship yard "Rijker Rotterdam" is original a vessel for transportation along the Dutch river Maas. A early picture (approx. 1900) of such a ship is shown here at the right.

From the official papers on the ship we learn that it was originally named "Adriana Dirkje" (1921) and later "Leny" (1955), both female names.

At least once a year the Mare Marieke is going to a ship yard for a total checkup and maintenance job.

Automatically, most of the hull is checked every week during the summer because one of the favorite outings of the guests is falling dry on the Waddenzee when the tide is low. The skipper and mates have time enough to clean and paint the hull.

When the hull clean the ship will also sail faster.
